Andrews tabs Pathfinder for trash pickup

A new company will be picking up trash in town beginning next month. Town Council on Monday night accepted a contract for garbage collection from Pathfinder Services. The town will terminate its affiliation with Wabash Valley Refuse at the end of April, and Pathfinder will begin pick-ups in May. Collections will continue to be made on Thursdays to make the transition as easy as possible for residents, said Steve Stanley, director of Pathfinder's recycling and refuse division.

Residents will also be allowed up to six bags of garbage each week, as has been the case with Wabash Valley. Andrews will contract services with Pathfinder for one year and then renegotiate its rates. The town utilizes Wabash Valley on a month-to-month basis, Council President Bob Gray said. "We have no contract" with Wabash Valley, he said.
Stanley first brought the proposal to Council in late January and returned Monday to answer any additional questions members had in regard to the service.

Council member Pete Clouser wondered how holidays would affect collection. "It depends on the holiday," Stanley responded. "The only time you're affected is if the holiday is on your pick-up day." Additional trucks are then sent out to make the additional collections. Normally, additional trucks are sent out the day after a holiday to make the additional collections. If a holiday affects two days - as is the case at Thanksgiving - routes are doubled up the day before and the day after the days affected.

Council President Bob Gray asked about the possibility of recycling pick up - how it's handled and what the additional cost would be. “We allow you to put it (recycling) all together and then we separate it," Stanley said. "We try to make it as easy as we can." Stanley had not figured recycling costs for the town but said he could provide Council members with that information if they were interested. Council decided to go with just trash collection at this time.

One reason Council considered making the change for trash collection is ongoing problems with the town's current provider. "I am still getting about four to five complaints a week," Town Clerk Kathy Juillerat said. Additional complaints had been received in her office until she provided residents with a telephone number so they could call Wabash Valley direct. Most complaints from residents concern missed trash.
Another problem, Juillerat said, is with the town's two dumpsters - one at the wastewater treatment facility and the other at the fire station. "My biggest complaint was it took six months getting the dumpster emptied at the fire station," she said. "I called every week.
"Contracting with Pathfinder seems to be a good move for the town, Council member David Jones said. "I say let's go with it," he said before making a motion to accept the contract. Council members voted unanimously to make the change.
